Cape Point

Cape Point is the extraordinary south-­westernmost point of the African continent. Within the Cape Point reserve, the treacherous cliffs forming the tip of Africa mark the spot where the cold Benguela current from the west and the warm Agulhas current from the east coast meet. Ride the Flying Dutchman funicular to the old lighthouse where stunning views stretch over the cliffs and ocean beyond.

 

Cape Point Ostrich Farm

This natural breeding farm was established in 1996, and has grown into a sightseeing destination for its unique landscape and guided tours. Visitors can get a glimpse into the farm’s daily workings and experience the hatching of ostrich chicks. Ostrich eggs painted and carved by local artists and fine leather goods are available to purchase.

 

Clifton and Camps Bay Beaches

Cape Town takes pride in its pristine beaches and many enjoy Blue Flag status, a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education. Clifton beach, which is sheltered from the wind, is considered one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Camps Bay beach is easily accessible and close to an array of restaurants and cocktail bars perfect for sundowners. Both beaches offer warm white sands and stylish beachgoers.

 

False Bay

The False Bay stretch of coastline is known for its brilliant beauty and vibrant seaside villages. On this stretch, visit the historic naval village of Simon’s Town, before seeing the sandy expanse of Muizenberg, which is known for its great surfing. St James, which is decked with colourful changing-room huts is also on this route, as is Kalk Bay with delectable seafood restaurants and playful seals surrounding the fishing boats, and Fish Hoek with its superb swimming beach.

 

Boulders African Penguin Colony

The African penguin, also known as the Jackass penguin, lives in a protected haven at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town. The colony of endangered species now numbers over 3,000 in this protected sanctuary. The charming penguins can be viewed in their natural habitat from wooden walkways, and the beach is one of few places in the world where one can swim among the penguins if you dare to brave the chilly waters.

 

Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve

The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve forms part of the Table Mountain National Park and is home to distinct and stunning fauna and flora, including fynbos, birds, buck, baboons and Cape mountain zebra. Activities within the reserve include a number of hikes highlighting the majestic beauty of the area as well as the Thomas T. Tucker shipwreck.

 

Boat Trip to Seal Island

This small island just off the coast near Hout Bay is a sanctuary for thousands of Cape fur seals and a variety of seabirds. The trip, which is loved by children, is about 40 minutes long and the boat ride back gives beautiful views of Hout Bay and its harbour.
